Gant Fall 2014 Sample Sale Report

The Gant Fall 2014 Sample Sale opens tomorrow morning (9/17) at 225 Fifth Ave.  This is one of the few sample sales in the city with more for the men than the ladies.  All three of Gant’s lines are there including Gant Rugger and Gant by Michael Bastian.  Pricing is similar to past years with outerwear running from $100 for light outerwear like this year’s Drive Jacket up to $300 for leather/suede jackets like the Gant Rugger Viva La Suede we spotted from the spring collection.

Shirts are $45 including a lot of Gant Rugger Hugger fit in all sizes.  Sweaters and pants/denim are $50 each while blazers are $195.  Short sleeve polo shirts are $30 and there is a small rack of $20 tees.

This is a true sample sale that is heavy on medium tops and 32 pants, but all sizes are there in most categories.  Certainly worth a stop if you like Gant.

The 2014 Scoop Warehouse Sale Report

The Scoop Warehouse Sale starts tomorrow (Sept 16) at 260 Fifth Ave.  About a third of the store is dedicated to an outstanding selection of menswear, all at 80% off retail.  Labels range from New Balance and Marc by Marc Jacobs to Maison Martin Margiela and DSquared2.  And it’s not just a summer overstock sale.  There’s plenty to start your fall/winter wardrobe like a Michael Bastian chunky fair isle sweater ($160 down from $795) or light jackets from Barbour ($70 down from $348) and Maison Martin Margiela ($354 down from $1770) and more.  On the other hand, if you have a trip planned or you want to be prepared for next summer, there are tons of Orlebar Brown swimming trunks ($48 down from $240) and polos ($24 down from $120).

Sizes at the sale in each category are varied enough to please most.  Pants are the only section sorted by size including two entire racks jammed with size 32.  Among them are chinos by Shipley and Halmos ($40 down from $200) and wardrobe staples like JBrand Kane fit raw denim ($31 down from $154) and the Tyler fit in gray.

The back of the store is dedicated to shoes.  The $14 New Balance sneakers will go quickly.  There are also some Bespoken oxfords and DSquared2 camo sneakers ($110 down from $550) from this past season.

Stretching from the front to the back of the store is a section of button down shirts, polos, and tees sorted by style like Hartford short and long sleeve button-ups, some Michael Bastian polos, and a variety of colored Pantone t-shirts.

Quality brands at great prices make this a really outstanding sale that we highly recommend checking out.

Alexander McQueen 2014 Sample Sale Report

The Alexander McQueen Sample Sale started yesterday (Sept 8) at 317 W 33rd.  Menswear prices were reasonable but most of the items appeared to be from past seasons.  Starting with shoes, there were two styles dominating the rack: a ton of Puma high tops with bright streaks on them ($100) and some nice flat bottom oxford lace ups in brown and blue ($150) which were probably the best value of the sale.  Other footwear styles were sparse but all $150.  Suits ($400) and blazers ($300) were mostly black including some tuxedo jackets.  Pants and jeans were $100 and most seemed to be a very wide-legged style.  There were a few basic sweaters/cardigans for $150 and outerwear was individually priced at $300 for a navy wool safari blazer up to $750 for a nice overcoat.  Worth checking out if you need a black suit/tux or the oxfords.

The August 2014 Barney’s Warehouse Sale

The Barney’s Warehouse Sale kicked off today at Metropolitan Pavilion. It seemed like an even smaller selection than last year.  At opening, everything looked like it was priced at the last clearance price from the store. Also, there weren’t any blue star deals which were the best value of last years sale. The only additional discounts were a small rack of orange tag merchandise which is mostly altered or flawed in some way. There is definitely some nice outerwear in the mix from Armani, Brioni, Barbour, Aspesi, etc and a lot of packaged dress shirts in all sizes including some from Thom Browne.  It’s worth stopping by if you weren’t able to check out the clearance section at the department store. Otherwise, I’d recommend waiting until things are discounted further.

Jack Spade Surplus Sale

The Jack Spade Surplus Sale is running online through Thursday, August 7th.  If you’re in the market for a new briefcase or some travel gear, this is a great sale to check out with items like the Boarskin Split Brief for $199 (retail $548) and the Work Twill Duffle for $139 (retail $455).

Fivestory Off-Site Sale

Fivestory is hosting a sale at the Bowery Hotel through July 23rd.  Enter on 3rd street and inside you’ll find several racks of menswear and sneakers for 60%-80% off retail.  Items include Michael Bastian linen shirts, Kitsuné shirts, Orlebar Brown swimming trunks, White Mountaineering Vests, Ovadia shirts, and more.  There are some really nice heavy jackets by Ten C for 80% off which is a brand that I wasn’t familiar prior to the sale with but they are turning out some very high quality outerwear.

Spring 2014 Opening Ceremony Sample Sale Report

The Spring 2014 Opening Ceremony sample sale starts today at 76 Mercer in Soho and runs through Sunday.  Inside, the menswear section is dominated by the Opening Ceremony brand and collaborations from past seasons.  You’ll find a ton of the Elvis line (sweaters for $50 and shirts for $65).  There’s a small rack of last year’s Adidas Originals collaboration with a paisley patterned shorts (~$55), pants (~$55), and jackets ($80).  There are also some shorts by Gitman for OC ($40) and some water shoes by Timberland for OC in various colors (~$55).

There is a smattering of other brands.  The best deal were last year’s Orlebar Brown polos in solid green or orange for $40.  We didn’t see any Kenzo and the only Patrik Ervell items we found were Fall/Winter 2012 daypacks for $230.  If you’re into the OC brand, definitely check it out.  Not a huge selection otherwise.

Bonus:  You can use your sample sale receipt at the New York Opening Ceremony stores between now and Sunday to get an additional 15% off sale items.

Spring 2014 Shipley & Halmos Sample Sale Report

The Spring 2014 Shipley & Halmos Sample Sale kicked off today and runs through Saturday at 8 Greene st.  A wide selection and great prices make this is the best S&H sale that I’ve been to.  All shorts are $45, cotton blazers for $125, and shoes for $75.  Specifically, we saw some Scottie Pennie Loafers in blue and tan ($75), Rhodes jeans in different colors ($65), and the Stephen sweater ($75 in S, M, and XL).  There’s also a table of accessories like ties ($30), belts ($35), socks ($10), and briefcases ($75).  Also, if you’ve been snubbed at previous sample sales because you’re not a size medium/32, this sale features sizes from 36-44 in blazers, 8-12 in shoes, and s-xl in everything else.

Want Agency Spring 2014 Sample Sale

The Want Agency Sample Sale starts today at 168 Bowery.  Menswear highlights include Maison Kitsune, Kitsuné tee, Arc’teryx Veilance, Nudie Jeans, and accessories from WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie.

The Maison Kitsuné selection was pricey but well-represented.  Shirts and pants were mostly $150.  There were plenty of current season items with highlights in outerwear like the Teddy BiColor JacketSatin Jacket ($350), and gingham print jacket ($300).  Kitsuné Tee t-shirts were $45 and a few striped polos for $50.

There was an extensive collection of Nudie jeans for mostly $75 with a couple pairs for $50 as well as Nudie shirts and sweaters for around $50.

Michael Bastian Spring 2014 Sample Sale

This season’s Michael Bastian Sample Sale starts today at 210 Eleventh Ave. Ste 300.  There’s a nice selection but some of the steepest prices we’ve seen at a sample sale.  $100-$190 for shirts.  Polos at $80.  Many sweaters are over $400.  Pants starting at $70 and a suede jacket for ~$1500.  Unlike some sample sales, the items here aren’t all sample sizes with a good selection of larger sizes as well.  The best value we saw was last year’s plaid linen bomber jacket for ~$250 in size 52.  They also have this season’s red printed jacket for ~$450 and this cardigan-track-jacket hybrid.
